Museum of Segovia

Casa del Sol (House of the Sun)

The Museum of Segovia, previously Regional Museum of Arts, dates back to 1842. It was made up of pieces of art coming from the convents closed by the Desamortizacion of Mendizabal which were not considered to be driven to the current Museum of El Prado.

After being placed in several buildings, the City gave the State an old building, the old slaughterhouse, working for that purpose from the time of Enrique IV, so-called Casa del Sol (House of the Sun). The exhibition is distributed in six rooms around the courtyard, where pieces of all ages are displayed. The first room, working as an introduction, is devoted to the territory’s geology and landscape, which explanations are supported in a huge model of the region and an audiovisual production.

In the second room we may find objects that belong to the period between Prehistory and the Late Middle Ages, including sections devoted to Roman world and the Aqueduct.

Among the collection, it’s worth highlighting two Celtiberian verracos (huge statues of bulls or wild boars), Roman mosaics, Visigoth enamels or a broad series of wooden paintings from castilian artists from the 15th and 16th centuries; along with interesting collections of coins moulded in the segovian Mint, glass pieces from La Granja, religious sculptures, engravings from Durero, Rembrandt and other authors, and contemporary paintings.
